MSI GeForce GTX 1080 AERO 8GB - overheating and running up to 90c
Not so long ago I decided to upgrade my graphics card to something more powerful, after searching I went with an MSI GeForce GTX 1080 AERO 8GB.
But I've been regretting that decision ever since. The problem with this card is it runs very hot and always throttles the frequency because it is reaching over 83c when playing demanding games such as Ghost Recon Wildlands. The fan/heatsink design is very poor. The speed of the fan varies with temperature and under heavy load (i.e. running hot) it also sounds very loud.
Having spent nearly £500 GBP on this graphics card, I don't want it to cease working as a result of running at those high temperatures. Thanks for equipping this graphics card with a substandard cooler MSI.
So what are my options?
I could use MSI Afterburner to adjust the fan RPM or upgrade the cooler with an after market one. Hardware solution is more robust and doesn't matter if you are using Windows or Ubuntu, so an aftermarket cooler it is.
Looking around I came across an Artic Cooling Accelero Xtreme IV for only £45 GBP on Amazon.
It wasn't the most staright forward of coolers to install, because it is a universal fit it requires you to build it together but the end result is impressive. My maximum temperature is now 50c on load and the fans don't even make any noise. It also weighs a fair bit.
At least now I can play Wildlands without the graphics card throttling and sounding like a hoover.
